The quintet skillfully blends soundscapes and improvisational elements to explore themes of hope and discovery, seamlessly weaving together various genres through intricate rhythms.
Drummers (Brad Samuels and Paul Aquilino) craft a unified pocket of polyrhythms, starting a topic with bass player (Mike Landis) on both 4-string and 6-string tic-tac bass, juicing the hook. Themes are cultivated, nurtured and destroyed on meandering planes established by guitar, synth and other sonic devices (Andre Radloff). Soaring and catchy, masterful trumpet (Ralph Burrows) transports us to other spheres.

5:00pm • $20 • Tickets on Eventbrite and at the door if still available
The first Saturday of each month Big Howdy hosts a showcase featuring a special guest!
Special Guest: Alice Gerrard
Alice Gerrard is a talent of legendary status.
In a career spanning more than 50 years, Alice has known, learned from, and performed with many of the old-time and bluegrass greats and has in turn earned worldwide respect for her own important contributions to the music. Known for her groundbreaking collaboration with Appalachian singer Hazel Dickens during the 1960s and ’70s, the duo produced four classic Hazel and Alice LPs on Rounder and Smithsonian Folkways that influenced scores of young women singers.
“[Hazel and Alice] were an overwhelming influence on many of the young women who were pouring into old-time and bluegrass music during this era. [1967-1975].... [They] left a legacy of spine-tingling backwoods harmony; sturdy old-time revivals; and resonant pro-woman original songs.”
— Finding Her Voice by Bufwack and Oermann, Crown Pub. 1993
Down through the years Alice has appeared on more than 20 recordings, including projects with many traditional musicians such as Tommy Jarrell, Enoch Rutherford, Otis Burris, Luther Davis and Matokie Slaughter; with Tom Sauber and Brad Leftwich as Tom, Brad & Alice, with the Harmony Sisters, The Piedmont Melody Makers, The Herald Angels, Beverly Smith, Kay Justice, and with Anna R-g and Elizabeth LaPrelle.
In 1983, she co-produced and appeared in the Les Blank documentary film Sprout Wings & Fly about Tommy Jarrell. In 1987 Alice founded The Old-Time Herald and the Old-Time Music Group, a non-profit organization that oversees publication of The Old-Time Herald. Alice served as editor-in-chief of The Old-Time Herald from 1987 till 2003.
A tireless advocate of traditional music, Alice has won numerous honors, including an International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Distinguished Achievement Award, a Virginia Arts Commission Award, the North Carolina Folklore Society’s Tommy Jarrell Award, and an Indy Award. In 2017 Alice was inducted into the IBMA Hall of Fame along with Hazel Dickens. A film by Durham filmmaker Kenny Dalsheimer about her life and music You Gave Me a Song, was shown at the Full Frame Festival in Durham, NC, at the Mill Valley Film Festival, and several others.
In 2023 Alice finished her latest recording project, Sun to Sun, on the local Durham label, Sleepy Cat Records. It features all original songs by Alice and one original instrumental by Reed Stutz, who also plays on the recording, along with Tatiana Hargreaves, Hasee Ciaccio, DaShawn Hickman, Gail Gillsepie, Marcy Marxer, Phil Cook, Nick Falk, and Joseph Dejarnette.
Now 90, Alice is touring less but still performs and teaches in workshops. You can find her schedule on the calendar. As she noted on the back cover of her latest recording: "In the dark of the night I think sometimes about how this might be my final recording, my final mattress, my final car, my final dog—but then you never know...."

They began as a “gonzo-folk” trio in 1986. Founding members Caldwell Gray, Lisa “Weezy” Venable Gray, and Tom Helf crafted a sparse brand of rock & roll that used acoustic guitar, drums and harmony-driven vocals to create a unique blend of folk, classic rock, ’80s new wave and bluegrass.
“Joining Caldwell and Tom in the current line-up are John Penovich (lead guitar and vocals), Todd Baker (fiddle and vocals), and Arch Alcantara (bass and vocals).”
Cravin’ Dogs has since evolved into an all-original, eclectic, roots-rock quintet that has played over 1000 shows and released ten full-length albums, one EP and two compilation retrospectives.

David Goodfriend • Skip Casale
• David has played in Goin' Goin' Gone for more than 40 years. What you might not know is that he and Russ Beeker had a duo called The Beverly Brothers that played at Kramerbooks for more than a decade. David's solo act includes a few GGG tunes but mostly it's songs that he wrote that the band never played, songs that move inside his soul, songs he sings to his living room walls.
• Skip played a lot of drums and guitar in his life until having an epiphany about music. He had an experience of knowing he could play the blues, and he just had to do it. He says surrendering in music is being drawn to play and being able to say, "I am a musician." Then, you just go with what you play in the moment. He also says, "Music is available to everybody." And it's important to just start, and you can learn to play music like being in a conversation.

Scott Tournet has lived a lot of stories. He grew up on a dirt road in rural Vermont with no electricity. He went to a clothing-optional college with no grades. After college, he drove across the country by himself with a tent and a guitar. He co-founded and was the main songwriter behind Grace Potter & the Nocturnals. He has played with The Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule, Bob Weir, Billy Gibbons, Robert Plant, members of Phish, etc. Performed for President Obama. Written and recorded with Dan Auerbach, Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss. During a tour of football stadiums across the United States opening for Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney, Tournet became disillusioned and stepped away from the band he helped build at the height of their success.
In the years following his departure, Tournet moved to California and formed the world music ensemble, Elektric Voodoo. He wrote and produced 3 full length albums, toured the country a number of times, and started a family. In 2023 Scott moved his family to the east coast and released his solo album 'Rock and Roll Stories'. The album found some radio success though Scott only toured minimally behind so he could stay home with his family.

The Shambles • Hard-Core Troubadours
The Shambles No band was more aptly named than The Shambles. They pretty much were always in that state. They rocked hard and most of their gigs way back when were in Baltimore. They flew under the radar in the DC area. But...you can find out what the all fuss was about when they reunite on Saturday 11/25 Thanksgiving weekend. The Shambles are Russ Beeker and David Goodfriend from Goin Goin Gone, Tommy Hannigan, Clark Matthews and Pete Kanaras who quit some band named The Nighthawks to play with them. It's District rock n' roll with The Shambles!
Hard-Core Troubadours At the turn of the century there was a roots rockin’ DC area band called the Hard-Core Troubadours. They played roots rock, country swing, surf, cowpunk, texas blues, alt country, and rockabilly. Whatever you call it, it was always danceable and fun! Now they’re back doing shows and adding some new material too!
The band is:

Drew Gibson

Drew Gibson
Drew’s music drifts on influence from the American days of country-blues and the singer-songwriters of the recent past. Since releasing his debut album “Letterbox” in 2007, the self-taught finger-style guitarist has garnered attention from USA Today, The Washington Post, RVA Magazine, and No Depression. With his intensely personal songs and an expert stagecraft as a live performing story-teller, Drew has graced stages across the country at revered venues such as The Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia.
In 2015 Gibson released his third effort entitled “1532.” The album was born from a healing journey on which he embarked after the loss of his father on the Fourth of July in 2012. "Fifteen Thirty-Two" traces stories of Gibson’s family from its roots in Scotland to the branches across Canada and the United States and was considered one of the top releases in 2015 by No Depression.
In 2016, Drew began recording his fourth album, “Shipbuilder.” After many years in the making, the album was released in April of 2019. “Shipbuilder” navigated songs about the ups and downs of life and how to float above the constant changing tides, while keeping dreams alive as we continue to grow. Gibson is currently recording his 5th studio album, due to be released early 2023.
“Drew Gibson writes big songs that you can hold in the palm of your hand.”
-The Washington Post
“Vocally, the album lies somewhere between Mark Lanegan and Bruce Cockburn, with perhaps a bit of Mark Knopfler, as Gibson’s excellent finger style playing is in the same class as the Dire Straits frontman.”
-The Chattanooga Pulse
"Infectiously melodic songs and virtuosic guitar playing. A fascinating listen.”
-The Greenville Journal
"It's the type of album that's clearly in a different league... one that would make most artists spend the rest of their career in the dark due to the large shadow it casts.”
-RVA Magazine
“Well worth checking out.”
-USA Today

MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER
THE MUSIC OF WEATHER REPORT
Scott Ambush • Chris Fischer • Al Williams • Deren Blessman • Eddie Montalvo
Weather Report was the gold standard. Critically acclaimed and with an adoring and growing fan base a rock supergroup would feel at home with, the jazz fusion quintet begun by ex-members of Miles Davis’ ground breaking bands, Weather Report were regarded as perhaps the most innovative and exciting group in music for much of their 15 year career spanning 1970-1985.
The group which focused on the superb compositions of founding members Joe Zawinul, & Wayne Shorter, also featured a constant merry go round of brilliant instrumentalists, including bass guitar genius, Jaco Pastorius. who also wrote for the band. Weather Report served as a launching pad for a host of fresh and exciting drummers, percussionists and bassists and each configuration of the group found new ground and seemed as intrepid as the others.
Anticipating the growing North American interest in world music, from the beginning Weather Reports' imaginative songs incorporated rhythms & harmonies from around the world, while also possessing actual hummable melodic hooks that laced the shifting pieces together. Their music includes elements of jazz, rock, funk, Latin, space age synthesizers and all manner of world beat. The 1977 masterpiece "Heavy Weather" included the endlessly catchy "Birdland" and in 2011 that album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
During the mid 1970's after Pastorius joined the group, the bands' live performances became events, as their music drew in both serious listeners and non jazz fans alike.

Peter Case
“I try to take things I love and use them in a new way,” said triple Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Peter Case of his 16th solo album Doctor Moan. Case brings his considerable songwriting ability to an 11-song collection, largely performed on piano, including his first solo recorded instrumental. Released by Sunset Blvd Records, Case’s piano-based songs are emotionally, sonically and stylistically rich.
As a founding member of the early punk era trio The Nerves, in 1977 Case toured the nation sharing bills with the Ramones, Mink DeVille, Pere Ubu, and Devo. The Nerves single “Hanging on the Telephone,” was covered by Blondie. In 1979, Case formed the Plimsouls, a record-breaking live act in California, recording albums for Planet/Elektra and Geffen. Their independent single, “A Million Miles Away,” entered the Billboard charts and remains a garage rock standard, performed by bands around the world. The band performed in the cult classic film Valley Girl and the Nerves and Plimsouls timeless teenage rock ‘n’ roll continues to appeal to fans of each new generation.

Sings and plays mid-century modern singer-songwriter music. What’s that? Don’t ask him; he made it up.
Charlie writes (and covers) songs about love, loss, hope, bewilderment, wistful longing, busted romance, modern technology, existential dread, and (of course) drinking.
If country music is three chords and the truth, then what Charlie’s after is four chords and the ambiguity. And you can't spell ambiguity without Am.

JM Stevens
5:00pm • Suggested $10 - $20 donation
JM Stevens
While it’s rare for a musician to drop two studio albums within a year, JM Stevens says there was no grand scheme to release Wish on a River Bridge, his third solo effort, a mere 11 months after its predecessor.
The seasoned singer-songwriter, with no one to answer to, simply felt free and eager to “make the best music I can, where I am in this moment in time, and get it out in the world.”
“The longer you sit on songs, there’s the chance they might marinate a little too long, and it’s so easy to talk yourself out of things,” the Austin, Texas-based Stevens says.
“Excellent second album from Texas songwriter. Simplicity is difficult to master in songwriting. Being able to say something in a conversational manner is a gift few artists do well. Tom Petty was perhaps the greatest at this. John Mellencamp also comes to mind. Add Austin native JM Stevens to that list. His sophomore album, Nowhere to Land, is full of gentle, yet infectious songs that are immediately relatable.” - Icon Fetch
“The majority of these songs sound as if they’ve been lingering in the ethos forever, uncannily familiar yet edgy enough to catch immediate attention and resonate well beyond.” - Goldmine
