Djangolaya
Djangolaya was founded in 2014 at Django in June, the renowned music camp dedicated to the music of Django Reinhardt. While attending the annual gathering in Massachusetts, three musicians discovered they all lived just minutes from one another in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC. Drawing on a deep network of friends and fellow gypsy jazz musicians, Djangolaya has grown into a flexible ensemble that performs in configurations ranging from an intimate duo to a swinging six-piece band, always tailored to the occasion.
Rooted in the traditions of Django Reinhardt and Hot Club-style jazz, Djangolaya blends soaring violin, expressive vocals, driving rhythm guitar, accordion, woodwinds, and upright bass into an energetic and elegant sound inspired by the cafés and dance halls of 1930s Paris.
The group features:
Jeanine Greene — vocals and violin
Charlie Schueller — accordion
Andrew Deshler — guitar
Jason Gekker — bass
Suzanne Gekker — woodwinds
James Key — guitar
Members of Djangolaya are active throughout the DC area music scene and have performed with groups including Hot Club of DC, Tom Cunningham Orchestra, YazooZazz, and numerous jazz, classical, and traditional ensembles across the region.
