Among the many things to be grateful for at SAW is the varied voices of the area. We asked MASC Alumni, Teghan Devon, to put together an evening of local writers and she has found us 3 other great area songwriters.
Teghan Devon is an award-winning singer-songwriter who specializes in what she calls “indie-folk emotional wrecking ball songs”. Whether it be personal heartbreak, characters from books and film, childhood dogs, or mother sea turtles, Teghan looks for inspiration everywhere. Her pure voice and unique point of view aim to embrace vulnerability and touch people’s hearts. Teghan’s writing shows traces of her heroes, Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers, Mitski, and Juliana Hatfield. Teghan’s voice has been compared to that of Norah Jones, Edie Brickell, and Fiona Apple.
Pet Names is a Maryland-based duo playing folk, rock, and beyond. Partners in both music and in life, Camila (guitar) and Maggie (bass) co-write all of their original music. Their sound is rooted in rich vocal harmonies and lively instrumentals, with lyrics that range from thoughtful to tongue-in-cheek. They draw inspiration across decades and genres—Washington City Paper wrote that their debut EP, Hey Hi Hello, “effortlessly pair[s] early aughts indie sensibilities with classic rock.”
Rebecca Berlin Imagine the voice of Sara Bareilles mixed with the honesty of Joni Mitchell and the poetic lyricism of Ani DiFranco. If there's one word to describe Rebecca Berlin it is alchemy. Her musical style, “folk with a twist”-blends the narrative quality of traditional folk with elements of jazz and musical theater, and she is known for unique melodies and song structures, vulnerable storytelling and a voice that cuts through the noise. After taking a 13 year break from music to pursue dance and build her career as a Pilates/Yoga/Gyrotonic teacher, Rebecca burst back into the music scene in 2023 and is rapidly gaining attention as a writer, singer and performer. Past releases include “Anatomy of a Breakdown” (2006), and “Grief Triptych” (2023); her upcoming album, “Questions and Answers”, is set to release in the Fall of 2024.
