“We met in a guitar shop in Greenwich Village back in 1989 after somebody said, “Hey, you guys should meet — you’re both good pickers.” We hit it off right away, started hanging out, and soon formed an acoustic duo after I’d just moved to New York City and Fausto had grown up on the Upper West Side.

Before long, we were offered Monday nights at the Ear Inn, where we performed as Lo Yo-Yo. The gig usually started around 11 p.m. and often went until 3 a.m. — sometimes with the sun coming up when we left.

Our music drew from a wide range of influences, with the ragtime guitar styles of Blind Blake and Rev. Gary Davis at the center. We also loved Nat King Cole, old-time country, and even the Beatles. With harmonized vocals, acoustic guitars, mandolin, and lap steel, we built a sound that was both rootsy and wide open.

I left New York in 2004, and our Ear Inn run eventually ended, but we’ve had a few reunions since then. And now here comes another one.”
